I must say, I truly love electronic sports. I am a complete fanatic and when something bad happens in electronic sports I get genuinely angry and when something good happens I get extremely excited. If the CheckSix Gaming Counter-Strike: Source team wins a match, I usually pump my fists. So naturally when a product that has to do anything with e-sports gets delivered to my door, I make sure I'm at home to open the package as soon as possible. This time around I was expecting a Gigastraps Cat 6 Ethernet patch cable and as usual, when the FedEx guy rang my doorbell, I pretty much ran to get the door.
So I have really been pushing our Marketing Director, Ian "FuzzyHat" Olson, as of late to get some products to my house so I can review them for our fabulous review section on the website. The easiest and quickest product to send to Europe was the Gigastraps Ethernet cable so I told Ian to get on it. However, when I opened the box at my house I started laughing. I thought to myself: "What did I get myself into? It’s an Ethernet cable..." I wanted to give myself a little time to think about what kind of crap I could write about an Ethernet cable until I looked at the cable again. Suddenly I opened up Microsoft Word and just started typing. Why? Because this cable truly intrigued me and got me excited!
Now, I do not have the equipment, nor do I have the hardware to compare and contrast the advantages of this Ethernet cable to other ones, so I will spare my fellow gamers the bullshit. But I most definitely can compare its practical uses and aesthetic qualities. I will start off with the obvious: the cable is beautiful. Now, I know this can often be a matter of opinion, but this cable comes in so many different colors. I happened to get a Crimson colored one, but a quick look at the Gigastraps website showed me that there are many colors to choose from such as: Tsunami (blue), Genesis (light green), Frost (silver/gray),Cosmos (black), Vixen (pink), Midnight (darker black?), Orc (dark green), and of course my Crimson (red) color. OK, so these aren't all of the colors of the rainbow so it can still be ugly according to some – WRONG – you can customize each and every cable. No matter who you are, you can't really argue that this cable is ugly, because you can design it yourself if you so wish.
The other
positive thing I liked about this cable is its sturdiness. It's advertised as a
kink-proof cable and I now see why. According to the Gigastraps website they
use a solid copper wire inside instead of strands woven together of copper
wires. This makes sense; it's harder to tie a hard wire into a knot than it is
to tie a strand of cables. Now I must say, I can kind of understand how for
some people this cable might be too rigid. It isn't very flexible, but I must
ask someone, why would you need it to be extremely flexible? An Ethernet cable
goes into the back of your computer and probably into the floor or wall; there
is no reason why the cable has to be able to be tied into a knot. In addition
to this solid copper wire, the cable is surrounded by a mesh which gives the
cable its color. However it also seems to server a protective purpose as it
seems very durable.

Now this cable also has gold-plated contacts and supports 10BASE-T, 100BASE-T, and 1000BASE-T. I'm going to be completely honest here and say – I don't know what that means. For most gamers, it won’t matter. You don't need to transfer massive amounts of data at one time to play a game. Sure, the more the better and that's the case for everything, but at some point it stops making a difference. Sounds cool though which I'll put down as a positive.
And now for the negatives. The only thing that could really be a problem is the flexibility. If someone is too lazy or plainly can't afford to hire someone to drill holes in their walls to get Ethernet cables from room to room, than they might have a problem getting this cord to stick to corners of walls. For instance if you're routing your cable from your office to your kitchen along your wall, you will have a really tough time rounding the corner of your door to get from room to room. The cable is extremely rigid and really isn't made for that type of use.

The greatest thing about this cable is that it isn't expensive. At home I actually have some remodeling going on and for me that also means rewiring everything since the room being remodeled is a media-style room. If I don't get a pack of these for free, I'm pretty sure I will buy 3-5 to route through my house; I would also recommend these cables to anyone. They're solidly built, they come in nice colors, you can feel it's not a piece of crap, and it works like an Ethernet cable. In addition to this, THEY ARE LESS EXPENSIVE THAN WHAT YOU CAN GET AT BESTBUY!
I didn't think I would do this, but I give this cable a 5/5 rating. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it, and yes I know it’s just an Ethernet cable, but it's a NICE Ethernet cable. Remember that.
